The endocannabinoid system is present in all mammals and serves to regulate cellular homeostasis. Cannabinoid receptors are present on every cell of the body and are stimulated by endogenous (from within the body) cannabinoids. CBD is a phytocannabinoid that stimulates these receptors directly, as well as indirectly, by regulating enzymes that produce endogenous cannabinoids.
Omega fatty acids are considered essential in that they cannot be produced by the body, and must be ingested. They are a structural component of all cell membranes and are important in the maintenance and formation of endocannabinoid receptors. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are precursors in the formation of the transmitters that regulate the endocannabinoid receptors.
A proper balance of omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids is necessary for the formation and maintenance of a functional endocannabinoid system that will maintain cellular balance. Omega 6 fatty acids (overabundant in normal diets) are precursors to inflammatory mediators and “bad” endocannabinoids, which can lead to overstimulation resulting in down regulation of the endocannabinoid system. Omega 3 fatty acids (deficient in normal diets) are precursors to anti-inflammatory mediators and become “good” endocannabinoids that counteract this overstimulation and down regulation.
Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome (CEDS) results from the lack of “good” endogenous cannabinoids, which is caused by an omega 3 deficiency, resulting in an imbalanced endocannabinoid system. In other words, the system that is designed to balance cellular function, needs itself to be balanced by maintaining a proper omega 3:6 ratio. By supplementing with phytocannabinoids and omega 3 fatty acids together, CEDS can be treated more effectively than with phytocannabinoids alone.
Administration of CBD under the tongue (sublingual) provides the best absorption directly into the bloodstream. This is difficult to do on animals and it is easiest to administer on food. This results in small intestinal absorption and first pass metabolism in the liver, which removes 80% of the ingested dose before it reaches the bloodstream.
Studies show that combining CBD with long chain fatty acids (omega 3), results in the encapsulation of CBD within the fats, creating micelles, which are absorbed by the lymphatic system and enter the bloodstream, bypassing the first pass liver metabolism. This results in a 2.5-3 fold increase in blood levels over CBD ingestion without fatty acids.
Not all omega 3 supplements are the same. Most fish oil supplements are concentrated into an ester form, allowing for double and triple strength levels of omega 3 fatty acids. Although they are more concentrated, they are much less bioavailable and are much more highly oxidized, depleting the body’s antioxidant stores. The triglyceride form of fish oil is the natural state of omega 3 fatty acids, allowing for optimal absorption, and when processed correctly, minimal oxidation.
CannOmega has been developed by veterinarians who have provided care for their patients for almost 4 decades , and have studied and witnessed the benefits of omega 3 supplementation for numerous health issues. Our understanding of the endocannabinoid system and its dependence on omega fatty acids for its very existence led us to a unique combination that has unmatched absorption and provides necessary balancing of the vitally important homeostatic system.
We grow our hemp in Western Colorado and have control of the genetics of seed production, planting and cultivation, irrigation, harvest and extraction of oils used in CannOmega. These oils are full spectrum phytocannabinoids (not CBD isolates), which take advantage of the ‘entourage effect’ of the over 100 compounds nature has provided us in the hemp plant which has served to heal mankind over centuries.
Our fish oil is of the highest quality available and is naturally of the triglyceride form for optimal absorption. Low oxidation values mean less fishy smell, better palatability, and less oxidative stress for our pets.
The reason some patients do not respond to CBD supplementation alone is obvious once you understand the importance of providing omega 3 to balance out the overabundance of omega 6 in most diets. Once we repair a sick endocannabinoid system with omega 3 supplementation, then we can reap the benefits that phytocannabinoids have to offer our pets.
Thank you for caring enough about your animal companions to give them the benefits of CannOmega.
